(Washington, DC) — The EPA is telling water utilities across the country that they’re at major risk for cyberattacks that could compromise water safety.
The Environmental Protection Agency used the word “alarming” in a news release on Monday to describe how vulnerable many water utilities are because of poor cyber security. The agency noted security-related violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act, such as shared logins and still allowing access to former employees.
The EPA acknowledged there have been cyber attacks against water utilities in Texas and Pennsylvania. WDAY Radio is reaching out to local water utilities to learn more about their cybersecurity protections.
