New York legislature set to ban “addictive” algorithms for social media companies

ALBANY, NY —  New York is passing legislature that would ban social media platforms from using “addictive” recommendation algorithms.

The state passed the bill on Friday, and it’s expected that Governor Kathy Hochul will sign it into law.  The bill would prohibit social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok from suggesting content to kids based on algorithms.

The law describes algorithmic feeds as “addictive” and says they negatively affect children’s mental health.
