ND bill creates new penalties for violated child custody agreements

BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota lawmakers are discussing stricter penalties for violations of child custody agreements.

The Senate bill introduced a strike system that establishes specific penalties for each instance a parent detains or withholds a child under 18 years old from another guardian. The system ranges from a criminal infraction fine of one thousand dollars to a Class A misdemeanor that includes one year in jail and up to a three thousand dollar fine.

The bill passed the Senate and is heading to the House.
