BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota legislators consider a bill to allow state firefighters to retire earlier.
The House bill would move firefighters to the state’s public safety plan which covers local government firefighters and law enforcement personnel. If it passes, state firefighters would have the option of retiring at age 55 with three years of service or once they have gotten a combined age and service duration of 85 years.
Right now, state firefighters are covered by the state’s standard retirement plan allowing employees to retire at age 65 or earlier based on length of service.
