(BISMARCK, ND) – When the North Dakota Legislature reconvenes in early 2025, many items of discussion will be of priorities to the state’s lawmakers.
And the state’s top leader in the State Senate says property taxes will be one of those.
“I think there is a coalescence around the idea that the amount of taxes that the political subdivision can levy should be capped,” North Dakota Republican Senate Majority Leader David Hogue told The Flag’s What’s On Your Mind. He says there’s also talk about a cap on the percentage the tax can increase, unless there’s an addition or improvement in the home.
“The year-to-year increases, I think we want to see a limit on those,” he said.
A second priority will be investment in animal agriculture.
“We’re seeing some interest in dairy operations in the eastern part of the state, and I think that’s great news,” Hogue said. “We need to advance that effort further.”
The third priority is workforce development.
“We are creating with the South Dakotas, the Minnesotas, the Montanas for workforce,” Hogue said. “It’s not a complete solution just to say that we’re going to try to attract Minnesota students into North Dakota. We have to do much more than that.”
