(PEMBINA, ND) – Pembina-based Motor Coach Industries (MCI) has shipped the first of nine battery-electric coaches built at its facility near the northern border.
The company shipped the coach bus Monday, and marks a significant milestone for the Pembina facility, which faced possible closure by NFI Group. In November 2023, NFI announced the planned closure of the Pembina facility by 20205, but changed plans after company officials saw a ‘path to retain the long-standing Pembina facility.’
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum said, “As a major manufacturer and employer in northeast North Dakota, Motor Coach Industries’ investment in the Pembina facility is great news for the region, our state’s economy and the hardworking North Dakotans who keep MCI on the industry’s cutting edge.”
MCI has been in Pembina since 1963.
