Report: Minnesota Public Schools student test scores across multiple subjects are below 50% proficiency

(WDAY Radio) — “Here in Minnesota, most of the kids in public schools cannot read or do math at grade level, a majority of kids in public schools in Minnesota.”

John Hinderaker made the claim on The Flag’s What’s on Your Mind. Looking at data published by the Minnesota Department of Education between 2022 and 2023, 45.49% of students tested proficient in Math during the year. Reading scores followed a similar path, at 49.92% proficiency. Science scores across the state fell even further, down to 39.21% proficiency.

Hinderaker is the president of the Center for the American Experiment, a group that is self described as an organization that emphasize free enterprise, limited government, personal responsibility and government accountability. They have commented extensively on data released by the Minnesota Department of Education showing lowering test results.

It is data that the state’s department of education aimed to address when the numbers were released in August of 2023.

“We will not shy away from what the data are telling us. These results send a renewed sense of urgency and underscore the importance of key supports that are already underway, said Commissioner Willie Jette in a statement released in August of 2023 on the topic. “As we enter a new school year, MDE is committed to providing support, through programs such as COMPASS and implementing the READ Act and other new legislation, to help every school in Minnesota as they strive to meet the academic, social-emotional and mental health needs of students.”
