North Dakota’s Marathon Oil Company reaches settlement related to flaring natural gas

The U.S. Justice Department and the EPA are settling with Marathon Oil in North Dakota over Clean Air Act violations.

The $64.5 million dollar settlement is the largest of its kind, requiring the Fort Berthold Reservation facility comply with the measure to reach emission reduction goals in over 200 facilities. In addition to the settlement funds, the company will be expected to implement $177 million in technologies by the end of 2024.

“This historic settlement – the largest ever civil penalty for violations of the Clean Air Act at stationary sources – will ensure cleaner air for the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation and other communities in North Dakota, while holding Marathon accountable for its illegal pollution,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “The complaint alleges that Clean Air Act violations at nearly 90 Marathon facilities resulted in thousands of tons of illegal emissions. “

The EPA says the violations largely were caused by flaring natural gas.
