St. Michael man sentenced following non-fatal shooting in 2021

FARGO, ND — A St. Michael man will serve 32 years in federal prison for three gun-related crimes.

Investigators say 21-year-old Nathaniel Azure pulled a gun during an assault and committed two non-fatal shootings in Fort Totten and St. Michael between January of 2021 and late May of 2022. Azure was found guilty of six federal gun crimes at his trial last December. He’ll be on supervised release for five years after he finishes his prison sentence.

“This is a firm and fare sentence that will benefit public safety on Spirit Lake,” said United States Attorney Mac Schneider. “Defendants who use firearms to commit violence in tribal communities can count on becoming federal defendants in the District of North Dakota. Our office is committed to working with our tribal, federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to prosecute and deter violent crime in Indian country.”

Several other defendants have previously been sentenced based on their role in the shooting.
