Severe Weather Awareness Week kicks off in Minnesota

MINNESOTA – The state of Minnesota is conducting its annual campaign to reeducate the public about seasonal weather threats and how to avoid them.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is run in conjunction with the National Weather Service, which also encourages people to craft and rehearse emergency plans.

On Thursday, outdoor warning sirens will sound at 1:45pm and 6:45pm for statewide tornado drills.

Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources data shows the state experiences 46 tornadoes on average each year.

Most tornadoes form between the months of May and August, with rare sightings as early and March and as late as December.

The week is broken down into a list of educational categories, which include alerts and warnings, lighting and hail, flooding and extreme heat.
