U.S. Navy Arctic training to take place in Minnesota

LITTLE FALLS, Minn. – The U.S. Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal will join the Minnesota National Guard Tuesday at Camp Ripley for a two week snow crab exercise to test the team’s capabilities in a simulated arctic environment and improve combat effectiveness.

Navy EOD will clear simulated unexploded weapons, secure critical infrastructure and communicate between units while maintaining command and control. Navy divers will compete in ice dive training including identification of weapons during dive and salvage operations on Lake Rapoon. The Minnesota National Guard will provide air support.

“Camp Ripley provides an opportunity to train in an environment that mimics the Arctic region, without the exceptional cost of traveling to remote areas. The Minnesota National Guard and Camp Ripley provide modern facilities, and the logistical and administrative support needed. They have been exceptional partners as we train and prepare to be able to respond to any situation in any environment,” Navy Captain Joseph Haywood said.

The Navy routinely patrols on, above and around Arctic waters.
