Veteran legislator concerned about term limits

(BISMARCK, ND) – A state legislator says he’s worried about term limits in the state’s citizen-led legislature.

“It’s going to be a brain drain,” Rep. Mike Nathe (R-Bismarck) said Tuesday during the first day of the 69th Legislative Assembly at the State Capitol in Bismarck. “We’re going to lose a lot of institutional knowledge and experience as we go forward.”

Nathe said there will be bills put forth in the legislature addressing the term limit issue.

“Maybe extending it, they may look to just get it repealed,” he said. “There are some issues that are wrong with the term limits right now, so I think there are some people that want to force it to the courts.”

He worries about the future of the state with the term limits in effect.

“We have people in there that know what they’re doing,” Nathe said. “Now you’re going to have people in there with only one or two sessions of experience. They’re not going to trust their judgement.”
