Voters to decide whether or not to fund new jail in Grafton

Interview with Walsh County Sheriff Ron Jurgens

(GRAFTON, ND) – Walsh County residents will soon head to the ballot box to decide if a new jail in Grafton should be approved.

The vote is scheduled for May 13.

The current jail is 50 years old, Sheriff Ron Jurgens told Flag Family Media News. Jail experts say that those who get 40 years out of a jail ‘are doing really well.’

“I think we’re doing really well with what needs to be done,” Jurgens said. “But there comes a time in everybody’s life where we have to look to the future and that’s what the Commissioners have done, and this is the project that they feel is best for Walsh County, as do I.”

Two questions will be placed on the ballot – one for up to 20 additional mills to help fund the project and a three-quarters of one percent sales tax to allow funding the construction of a County jail and Sheriff’s office.

Both questions need to pass for the project to pass.
