Western North Dakota sees “extreme” drought conditions as wildfires continue to burn

BISMARCK, ND — Drought conditions across western North Dakota are intensifying, as wildfires continue to impact the region.

The areas facing “extreme drought” include the westernmost counties; including Divide, Williams, McKenzie, Golden Valley, Slope, Bowman, and Billings. As of this publication, there are no areas in the state facing “exceptional drought”, the highest category considered by the drought monitor. Other areas continue to see severe or moderate drought, including portions of central and eastern North Dakota.

In addition to the intensifying drought conditions, a majority of the counties have active burn restrictions in place.

Wildfires remain ongoing in several areas of North Dakota. This includes Ray and Tioga, near Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and west of the Mandan Hidatsa and Arikara Nation in Central North Dakota. A total of 110,000 acres are burned at this time.
