The Bison Women were in action Wednesday night hosting the rival South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
South Dakota quickly grabbed a five-point lead in this game, but the Bison would hit three, three-point shots to fight back and grab a early 9-7 lead. This lead however, which lasted just 15 seconds, would be the only one NDSU would have all night. The Jackrabbits immediately hit a three-pointer to kickstart a 9-1 run, ending in a 21-13 lead at the end of quarter one.
The second quarter flowed similar to the first, as South Dakota would remain ahead, with North Dakota staying behind. An Avery Koenen jumper early in the second brought the Bison back to within seven, but they couldn’t string together shots. SDSU kept knocking down shots and were great on defense, giving up only three more field goals the rest of the quarter. The Jackrabbits would head into the halftime break up 10.
The third quarter is where NDSU really experienced the thick of their shooting struggles, as they shot 3-17 collectively as a team, two of those fortunately falling from the three-point line. Senior Paige Meyer scored eight points in the frame for SDSU. The Jackrabbits would end the quarter up 50-35.
North Dakota did get to leave with something however, as their fourth quarter shooting improved to 50 percent. They went 6-12, scoring 18 points in the fourth, their most in a quarter. The Bison never brought this game to anything closer then 12 points in the fourth quarter. SDSU would go on to win this one 68-53.
Sophomore Avery Koenen lead the Bison in scoring with a 13-point, 11 rebound double-double. The forward was the only Bison to crack double digits in scoring Wednesday. Paige Meyer lead the Jackrabbits in scoring with 15 points, shooting 6-13 from the field, hitting two of her four shots from the three point line.
NDSU’s record now sits at 16-8 overall, 8-3 in Summit League play. They are back in action this Saturday as they’ll take the trip up I-29 to take on the in-state rival University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Tip-off Is scheduled for 7 p.m.
