Panthers win first Stanley Cup in franchise history

(Sunrise, FL) — The Florida Panthers are the 2024 Stanley Cup champions.

The Cats took down the Oilers 2-1 in Game Seven from Sunrise. Carter Verhaeghe opened the scoring early in the first period, but Mattias Janmark tied the game for Edmonton minutes later. Sam Reinhart’s goal late in the second period stood as the game-winner.

Sergei Bobrovsky bounced back in a big way and stopped 22-of-23 shots to secure the Panthers’ first-ever cup. Florida entered the league as an expansion team in 1993 and got over the hump after losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in last year’s Cup Final.

Edmonton failed to complete the comeback after trailing the series 3-0. Connor McDavid was named the Conn Smythe winner, which is awarded to the most valuable player in the entire playoffs. The Oilers were just the third team in Cup Final history to force a Game Seven after dropping the first three games of the series.
