Did Fall Come Early or Will Summer Be Back?

Do you miss the cool crisp morning of fall? It’s now August and although some Augusts can be very hot… this week will not be. Daytime highs throughout this week into the weekend will remain in the 70s for most locations with overnight and morning low temperatures in the upper 40s to mid 50s across the area. There are also a couple of breezy days and chances for showers.

For today, Wednesday (8/7/24) I expect temperatures to stay in the 60s for most areas through the day with a few brief highs near or in the lower 70s. It will turn breezy this afternoon with wind switching out of the north between 10-25 mph for a few hours along with some scattered showers and a few storms possible before mainly 4:00 pm. Tonight gets chilly with clearing skies, temperatures will drop into the upper 40s to the north and lower 50s around Fargo into the Lakes Area of Minnesota. Thursday will be a blustery and raw day, truly a October day with highs in the 60s a few spittings of rains with a stiff northwest wind between 15-30 mph at times gusting upwards of 40 mph in spots.

Friday conditions do recover a bit but it will still be cool for an early August day. Average high/low temperatures for Grand Forks, Fargo, and Detroit Lakes are 81/56, 82/58, and 79/57 degrees respectively. So you can imagine the upper 70s to low 80s is where most of the area should be with overnight/morning lows in the mid 50s. Friday highs reach near 70 with partly cloudy to at times partly sunny skies and a gently northwest breeze between 10-15 mph. Into the upcoming weekend, I will leave rain out of the forecast for now but I am monitoring a weak upper level disturbance that could tick that chance up and back into the forecast. For now mid 70s Saturday and mid/upper 70s Sunday with light winds.

Are there any signs of summer returning or are we stuck with Pumpkin spice and sweaters?

I see signs of temperatures returning to near 80 next week with overnight lows in the lower 60s. Beyond next week there are signs of a heat ridge building over the Northern Plains into Canada mid-month. If this verifies 80s and 90s will be back in the forecast with more humid conditions. Looking into the LRC for the rest of August into September, temps will cool off again to end August and then warm back up for September. Average high temperatures from September 1st to 30th drop from 78 to 65 degrees in Fargo ND.
