There will be a LOT of wind in the forecast for this weekend with winds gusting over 50mph across the state. What is responsible for all the wind though? Let’s take a look into why it’s going to be windy. First off, in meteorology, winds flow from high to low pressure. This weekend we will have a strong area of low pressure in Canada while a strong area of high pressure moves east into the great lakes. The difference in pressure between the high and low creates a BIG wind machine:
The black “lines” across the Dakotas and Minnesota are lines of equal pressure (isobars). The closer those lines are together, the stronger the winds. Notice how tightly packed the isobars are!! The map above is for Saturday morning. Now let’s look at Sunday:
The area of low pressure scoots off into eastern Canada with tightly packed isobars out of the NW for our area. So, windy for Sunday but not AS windy as Saturday. Quiet weather expected all next week too with above normal temps and lighter winds.
